FileWizard for HSM

Hierarchical Storage Management for Novell NetWare

Overview:
FileWizard HSM provides the benefits of Hierarchical Storage Management for NetWare Networks without the large costs of a complex storage management system. The benefits are typically automated management resulting in increased productivity and reduced costs. For analysis and graphical reporting of your NetWare, XP/200X, and Unix NFS volumes use the regular FileWizard PC based software.

Reduce disk storage requirements:
Automatic migration of infrequently accessed files to any storage device that can be mounted as a NetWare volume. (Lower performing or compressed disks, optical or tape jukeboxes or single devices). Transparent recall of migrated files when accessed by users or applications.

Improve User Productivity:
The operation of HSM system is transparent to the user. The user sees the file identifying information, the "stub", when requesting the file. The user may have slightly longer access time (depending on the device where the data is stored). Eliminates wait time for manual restoration of archives, and "out of space" errors.

Use existing backup/restore:

  • File migration and recall is fully transparent to any backup and restore procedures supported by NetWare.
  • Provides for backup of the stub or placeholder files.
  • Allows use of file without de-migration if the server is over the capacity threshold. The file is recalled directly to the workstation without involving the server.

Maximize Performance and Minimize Cost by Frequency of Access:
Automatically arrange data storage with "hot data" on high speed devices, and "colder" data on lower performance and lower cost devices. This will maximize performance and minimize cost.

Explicit Migration Control:

Migration commands allow explicit migration control. For example, file size, date/time of last access, and filename can be used to set migration rules.

  • File Size: Set the minimum size of file to be considered a migration candidate.
  • Filename/Directory: Specify filename and path to exclude or include the file as a migration candidate. Folders and underlying files and sub-folders can be migrated up and down the storage hierarchy.
  • High/Low Watermark: Set "high" & "low" watermarks as points where automatic migration would start/stop.
  • Prioritize Migration Candidates: Specify the migration order, by file size, by file last access date.

Commands:

Maintain control over operation of HSM with the following commands:

Command
Description
dsmautomig

Starts threshold migration for a file system.

dsmdf
Displays space usage information for a file system.
dsmmigfs
  • ·Adds space management to a file system, or updates space management attributes for a file system.
  • Deactivates or reactivates space management for a file system, or removes space management from a file system.
  • Manages recovery from partial system failure (GPFS only).
  • Displays current space management settings for a file system.
  • Deactivates or reactivates space management for your client node.
dsmmighelp

Displays online help for commands.

Dsmmigquery
Displays space management information. For a file system, you can display a migration candidates list, a recall list, or a list of all resident, premigrated, and migrated files. For a client node, you can display information about available management classes or the values set for client-server options.
dsmmigrate
Moves selected files from a local file system to TSM storage.
dsmmode
Sets one or more execution modes that affect the space management-related behavior of commands.
dsmmonitord
Starts the HSM space monitor daemon.
dsmrecall
Moves selected files from TSM storage to a local file system.
dsmrecalld
Starts a space management recall daemon.
dsmreconcile
Synchronizes client and server and builds a new migration candidates list for a file system.
dsmmigundelete
Re-creates stub files that have been deleted from the NetWare server. Restores to original directory if it still exists.

Requirements:

NetWare servers running NetWare 4.x and above.
